Defeated, humiliated, and in chaos, Germany after World War I was imperiled by leftist revolution and right-wing violence.  Jack Mayer recounts the origins of the Third Reich through the story of Ernst Werner Techow, who was recruited into a clandestine assassination network trying to bring down the fledgling Weimar democracy.  Techow participated in the 1922 murder of Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau, the highest-ranking Jew in the Weimar Republic. Local author Alexis Paige will read from her flash memoir of trauma and addiction, Not a Place on Any Map.  Winner of the 2016 Vine Leaves Vignette Collection Award, the book is a memoir in vignettes about surviving trauma. In snapshots of the disparate places where she grew up, the author traces a turbulent life, including her descent into despair and addiction after being sexually assaulted while on her first trip abroad.
